Paper vs. Digital: Choosing a Backup Format for Tracking Pages
When to print, when to encrypt, and why most long-hold holders keep both.
Every Panel Ashcore session produces two deliverables: a printed folio and an encrypted PDF. Holders often ask whether they need both. In our experience, yes — for different failure modes.
When Paper Wins
Printed tracking pages survive:
- Hard drive failure
- Forgotten passwords on encrypted files
- Cloud account lockouts
- Software format obsolescence
A spiral-bound folio in a safe deposit box or home safe requires no electricity, no login, and no software updates. For holders who think in decades, paper is the durable layer.
When Digital Wins
Encrypted PDFs are easier to:
- Search when you have twenty or more addresses
- Share with an accountant (via password communicated separately)
- Update after a session revision without reprinting the entire folio
We deliver PDFs with AES-256 encryption. You choose the password during the session. We do not retain the password or an unencrypted copy after 30 days.
The Redundancy Principle
Cold storage holders already understand redundancy — metal seed backups, multiple geographic locations. Tracking pages follow the same logic. Paper in the safe, PDF on an encrypted USB in a second location, and a note in your filing system that both exist.
What to Avoid
Do not store unencrypted tracking pages in email, cloud drives, or messaging apps. Address lists are sensitive even without private keys. If you must use cloud storage, encrypt the file first and keep the password offline.
